Once you get machine worlds you can replace all your farming districts with generator districts and you will be sorted, more or less. That will keep you going even though you are always bleeding energy at an alarming rate. I've found in every game I've played once the economy stabilizes a bit you can almost always sell food for close to 2 energy each (I've never seen it sell for less than 1 energy on the global market). Don't build the bio-reactors, they are a trap. You need to not only max generator districts on every single planet, but also farming districts, then sell the food on the market.
Pretty much no matter what you do until later game with machine worlds and ringworlds you will be in red energy. Staying on 3-4 worlds at the start is managable if you are playing a tall machine empire. It provides more jobs and gives more resources than the normal districts plus it frees up the building slots on your planets for refinery buildings to give you those special resources which you will need for upkeep on those upgraded alloy foundries and research buildings. Go for the habitation districts and make the research building or an alloy foundry. If you are going to make habitats though I do not recommend building the research and generator districts because their output is too low.
It will also make enough energy that you could turn your generator machine worlds into mining/refinery ones so you could make more alloy foundry/research habitats. Those free alloys will let you build more ships, probably alloy/research habitats, other megastructures such as the matter decompressor or science nexus. I know dyson spheres give you 1000 (1200? not sure if my game is glitching) upkeep free energy however ringworlds give 4x that number with even less alloy investment per generated energy. Aside from what Lightbane stated, ringworlds are a good investment energy wise.
